Galen (129 – 217 AD) – the father of modern day medicine

Aelius Galenus or Claudius Galenus better known as Galen of Pergamon  was a prominent Greek physician, surgeon and philosopher. Arguably the most accomplished of all medical researchers of antiquity, Galen contributed greatly to the understanding of numerous scientific disciplines including anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology,neurology, philosophy, and logic.

He travelled extensively, exposing himself to a wide variety of medical theories and discoveries. Galen’s understanding of anatomy and medicine have influenced western medical science for nearly two millennia. His anatomical reports were based on practical dissection and remained uncontested until 1543. Galen saw himself as being both a physician and a philosopher.
